When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. (John 16:13)

Brothers and sisters in Christ,

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and Jesus Christ the Lord and Savior. Amen.

Jesus instructed his disciples, “Let them alone they are blind guides of the blind. And if one blind person guides another, both will fall into a pit.” (Matthew 15:14) Who are the blind guides of our day? What functions as blind guides in your life? What messages do you hear or experience that are leading you into either a shallow understanding of Christ or leading you away from God?

It is an ongoing struggle to discern God’s will amidst all the noise of the blind guides. Different blind guides may appear in your lives at different times and may be different for different people, but those guides are all around us. They weave in and out of our daily lives and worm their way into our psyches. No matter how hard we try to silence the messages contrary to God’s will, they continue to assault us.

Whether they be people, objects, philosophies, pursuits or our own sinful selves, whatever does not serve to deepen discipleship and faith will lead you into a pit. Pits are notoriously difficult to escape. It is much easier to fall into one that climb out of one. While Jesus acknowledges the presence of blind guides, he also promises a more potent guiding force.

The Holy Spirit is stronger than any other guiding force in our lives. The Spirit will guide you into all truth and will conquer those things in your life vying for your loyalty. The Holy Spirit will enlighten you, emboldening you to, “let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 6:16b)

The grace and peace of God that surpasses all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Amen.

In Christ,

Pastor Carla
